Daydreaming With… The Hong Kong Edition | Exhibition Recap Posted: 05 May 2012 12:41 AM PDT Photos by Travis K. Known worldwide as the creative force behind the musical entity UNKLE, James Lavelle’s interest in seeking out the boundaries of creativity started quite early. First in the form of the iconic Mo’ Wax record label, one which he founded at only the age of 18. Then as UNKLE, where Lavelle would push the envelope again in the creation of music. That journey has come in full circle with Daydreaming With… The Hong Kong Edition. A traveling exhibition of “experiences” curated with fellow artist Simon Birch, the multimedia exhibit features works by collaborators like Futura, 3D (Massive Attack), Faile, and many more, it is an exploratory voyage for you senses, that purgatory dream-like state where your neither asleep or awake. Its that blurring of the conscious, when you’re partially surrendering yourself to your surroundings, the very sensation Lavelle tries to achieve in Daydreaming With…, . Fine tuning to the very last hours, Lavelle was on hand to talk with the first few visitors about Daydreaming With… The Hong Kong Edition. The exhibition also features several new additions from notable Hong Kong artists like Li Wei, Huang Rui, Prodip Leung, Cang Xin and Wing Shya. Jamie Shovlin, Emma Richardson, art collective known as Shynola, all have contributed new works to the exhibit as well. Daydreaming With… The Hong Kong Edition is now on display at Artistree and serves as an ideal prelude to the upcoming Honk Kong Art Week. Free admission to all, the exhibit opens daily from 10:30 am to 7 pm. Artistree Exhibition Dates: May 4th, 2012 (Friday) – June 7th, 2012 (Thursday) | 10:30am – 7pm

Retronaut – Unboxing of Nike Oregon Waffle Circa 1973 | By Wary Meyers Posted: 05 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT The Retronaut site is run by Chris Wild of Oxfordshire, England, an ex-museum curator and entrepreneur who travels back in time — in a manner — by using “just his perception,” thus becoming a retronaut. He views his site as a portal into the past, which goes hand in hand with the interest of design company Wary Meyer, made up of husband-and-wife team Linda and John Meyers. Their hobbies include looking for “ultimate finds” at estate sales, flea markets and thrift shops, presumably through which John came across this amazingly pristine pair of made-in-Japan Nike Oregon Waffle running shoes, complete with original box. Likely manufactured as part of the nascent brand’s original 1973 run, the combination nylon-suede kicks feature a classic yellow/green colorway and Bill Bowerman’s waffle sole. Check out the un-boxing presentation below.

Samsung Galaxy S III – Officially Unveiled Posted: 04 May 2012 10:30 PM PDT Well, it’s finally here — and by “here,” we mean Europe. The Samsung Galaxy S III was unveiled at the Mobile Unpacked event in London and is scheduled for a May 29th European release. Samsung is vague about global release details, while tech blogs report the new Android flagship will land on our shores sometime in June. Will it be worth the (relatively short) wait? The most obvious benefit is the jumbo screen size — specifically, a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a 1280 x 720 pixel count. It’s powered by Samsung’s new 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad processor with 1GB of RAM and runs a customized version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. There’s an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.9-megapixel shooter in the front, which the phone uses to adjust the screen brightness (the feature is called “Smart Stay”). Additional highlights include S-voice, a Siri-like technology that allows voice control of the phone; Smart Alerts, offering notifications of missed calls or messages; and S Beam, which enables photo and video sharing just by tapping two Galaxy S IIIs together. Stay tuned for pricing info and an exact release date.

Fresh Celeb: Spike Lee – Nike Air Foamposite One | “New York Knicks” Posted: 04 May 2012 09:31 PM PDT Spike Lee‘s expression at Madison Square Garden‘s courtside summed up the overall mood on Thursday night. Over New York fans’ raucous chants, the Knicks made every move counts and kept up pressure against the visiting Miami Heat. Offensively, the Heat just couldn’t get their momentum up during the early part of the game. Seizing the moment, the Knicks was only down two points by the end of third quarter. All changed during the final quarter when LeBron James charged up the rest of Heat’s offense. In the end, not even Spike Lee’s Nike Air Foamposite One “Knicks,” an edition specifically made for him by Nike, could alter the outcome. The Miami Heat won Games 3 of the Playoff Series 87 to 70.

Nike SB Dunk High “Beer Bottle” Pack Posted: 04 May 2012 08:30 PM PDT Stockholm’s Caliroots has taken delivery of a Quickstrike twosome of Dunk High Pros from Nike SB that the store has identified as the “Beer Bottle Pack.” Both styles have an all-suede upper, with one featuring a green base accented with a black Swoosh and red laces (seemingly inspired by Heineken — no stranger to the Nike SB brand) and the other carrying a tonal brown upper with red laces, gum sole and the Stars and Stripes atop a white nylon tongue (the colors ostensibly a nod to the King of Beers). Both shoes are available in-store at Caliroots. Cali Store

Belkin – LiveAction Camera Shutter Grip For Apple iPhone Posted: 04 May 2012 06:30 PM PDT As humans, our opposable thumbs led to the evolution of tool usages by our ancestors. Some even argued that it led to the development of culture. But one skill the almighty thumb isn’t too dexterous of is that simple press of the shutter button. And while the brilliant design team at Apple still has not remedy the issue of an actual shutter button, peripheral maker Belkin has in the form of its LiveAction Camera Shutter Grip. In a contoured, soft touch form factor, the LiveAction Camera Shutter Grip, couples with Belkin’s free LiveAction App, allows you to take quick pics with ease. A separate button for video means no more fumbling for the right medium in situations. Outfitted with a tripod mount and adjustable to fit over any protective case, it works with the Apple iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPod Touch. Best of all, you will least likely to suffer another breakage because you drop your phone. Available now at both Photojojo and Belkin online stores.

The Amazing Spider-Man – Official Trailer 2 | Video Posted: 04 May 2012 06:00 PM PDT In the wake of the artistic and commercial success of The Dark Knight, there was a bit of handwringing throughout the nerd community (the term “nerd,” by the way, has lost any sort of negative connotation, and we use it in that spirit) that film studios would feel the need to create “dark” superhero movies, in which the mise-en-scene is perpetually dimly lit and portents of doom attach to every plot development. The reboot of the Spider-Man franchise is clearly in line with the trend, a shift that’s made more explicit when viewing the newly released official trailer (especially compared to trailer no. 1). Its somber tone is established right away with Peter Parker’s voiceover, decrying his uneasy existence, the opposition of numerous enemies and the mystery surrounding his parents. Thankfully the film isn't all doom and gloom, as there are thrilling action set pieces in store, along with a good look at the film’s villain, the Lizard. Directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and Denis Leary, The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters July 3rd.

Stussy x Converse Elm & Sea Star featuring Hanni El Khatib Posted: 04 May 2012 05:00 PM PDT In joining forces on their collaborative project, Stussy and Converse looked to certain individuals for inspiration, whose spirit and drive personified the core principles of both brands. For the Stussy x Converse Summer 2012 collection — made up of the Sea Star and Elm sneakers — the brands looked to musician Hanni El Khatib. Currently living in L.A. and signed to the Innovative Leisure record label, Hanni grew up skateboarding in San Francisco, eventually signing on with HUF as creative director. He’s since moved on, following his dream to become a fulltime musician. (Check out a sampling of Hanni’s brand of hard-driving music, used in a 2011 Converse promo clip, here.) Stussy and Converse salute Hanni’s creative passion. The co-branded Sea Star and Elm are available now at Stussy chapters and online.
