| TopSpeed Rendering: McLaren F1 successor Posted: 17 May 2012 09:00 AM PDT
McLaren has already confirmed that a successor for the legendary F1 supercar will be unveiled sometime in 2013. Codenamed the MP4-27, this future supercar has been caught testing a few times, and based on those images, we have prepared a new rendering. As for the inner workings of the MP4-27, rumors say it will share a similar carbon Monocell structure as the MP4-12C and will be powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine combined with a KERS energy storage system. So, for those that were hoping to see a V12 under the supercar’s hood, forget it; McLaren has confirmed that none of its future models will get V12 engines. However, even with a V8 engine under the hood, the MP4-12C will deliver impressive performance: 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds! The McLaren MP4-27 will be built in a limited number of 300-500 units and will be priced somewhere in the $1 million area. Rumors have been swirling since 2011 regarding the Chevrolet SS and we were amongst the first to start discussing it. The rumors cooled off up until a few weeks ago when after 40 years of using the "SS" logo, GM finally decided to trademark it. Later the rumors became even more certain, as OnStar, GM's in-vehicle communication system, mistakenly put the 2014 model lineup on its site. Within that lineup was a model dubbed the SS Performance. This all adds up to a solid case that the Chevrolet SS Performance is on its way to the U.S. According to the rumormill, this would also result in the Holden Commodore SS, which was once used as the Pontiac G8, becoming the vehicle that dons the 2014 SS Perfomance badges. With this release, Chevy would finally have a performance sedan to stack up against the likes of the Charger R/T and the Ford Taurus SHO. UPDATE 05/17/2012: Chevrolet has officially confirmed that their new SS Performance Sedan will be a 2014 model and will arrive in dealer showrooms in late 2013. A racing version will compete at the 2013 Daytona 500. The model will be built in limited edition and will carry a derivative of the award-winning global rear-wheel-drive architecture that spawns performance vehicles like the Chevrolet Camaro. "As a passionate race fan and performance enthusiast, I am thrilled that Chevrolet will deliver a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR racecar in the SS that is closely linked to the performance sedan that will be available for sale," said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America. "The Chevrolet SS is a great example of how GM is able to leverage its global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience that extends beyond the track. I am personally looking forward to driving it." Click past the jump to read our full review of the anticipated SS Performance and how it stacks up against the competition. | Aston Martin still wants to produce Lagonda SUV Posted: 17 May 2012 07:00 AM PDT
When Aston Martin unveiled the Lagonda SUV back in 2009, it was thought to be the beginning of the Lagonda revival, previewing the company’s first SUV. That idea crumbled about a year later when Aston Martin announced that a production version would never be built. Instead, the company wanted to focus on a Lagonda version of the Rapide sedan. To make it even more confusing, Aston Martin is now reconsidering its decision because it’s trying to enter markets like China where large models are a must. That, and because of the market’s positive reaction to Bentley’s EXP 9 F concept. According to Autocar, Aston Martin boss Ulrich Bez already confirmed that an updated Lagonda concept is being developed and that it will be unveiled next year. The new Lagonda SUV has been confirmed as a super-luxury 4x4 and will target the future SUV from Lamborghini. Next to it, Aston Martin will also bring out a second Lagonda model, a saloon. | Ferrari 612 Scaglietti Sessanta Posted: 17 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT
Technically, Ferrari debuted in 1929, but its official debut is recognized as 1947, the year that Ferrari began manufacturing street-legal vehicles. The 2007 model year marked the 60th anniversary of Ferrari's street machine building life and the automaker wanted to make it a special one. Instead of doing what many automakers do (see: Ford) by slapping "60th Anniversary" badges on every car that year, Ferrari chose to build 60 completely unique cars for the 2007 model year. To accomplish this, Ferrari took its existing 612 Scaglietti and modified it to create the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti Sessanta. As we said, only 60 of these cars were ever built, so they are rather rare. Add in the fact that this bad boy was a whopping $424,480 in 2007 and you can tell that these cars were built for the true collector. If you are a true collector of Ferrari's and would like to own one that very well may be the Ferrari to own in the next 20 to 30 years, this Sessanta is a safe bet. F.C. Kerbeck, a dealer of luxury vehicles, is now offering you the opportunity to own one of these rare machines, as they have one up for sale in their showroom and on Ebay. | Armortech & Atelier Valdeig Tresor Posted: 17 May 2012 05:00 AM PDT
Russian tuner, Armortech, and its German contemporary, Atelier Valdeig have joined forces to introduce a new luxury SUV. The vehicle is called the Tresor, which in French translates to "treasure." It’s based on the Audi Q7 and comes with plenty of styling cues from two of the most high-end brands on the planet: Rolls-Royce and Bentley. The front end of the Tresor actually looks a lot like a Bentley and if you really think about it, you could make a case that this is what the Bentley EXP 9 F should have looked like in the first place. Whereas the exterior doesn’t do a whole lot to stir anyone’s imagination, the interior of the Tresor is a different picture altogether. With the help of Bentley, Armortech and Atelier Valdeig gave the Tresor’s interior plenty of elegantly appointed high-end components, including a full-on leather upholstery, premium wood trim, and plenty of metallic accents. If all these aren’t enough, the builders are offering bespoke options to customers, which include a number of additions, highlighted by interior partitions - for privacy’s sake - and high-tech entertainment systems. Since the car is based on the Q7, the powertrain options follow as such. With a choice of a variety of engines, including an Audi-sourced V12 TDI that produces 500 horsepower and 737 lb/ft of torque, customers will have plenty of say on how their Tresor SUV performs and looks. No word yet on when the Armortech & Atelier Valdeig Tresor will hit the market, but you can expect to hear more about it in the coming months. Usually when someone says Kahn Design, we automatically think about updated Land Rover models. This time, however, the British tuner is changing things up a bit with a new package based on the BMW X5. This particular model is priced at £23,875 ($38,300 at the current exchange rates), but any customer who owns a 2007+ X5 can order the Kahn package for £2,150 ($3,450 at the current rates). On the exterior, the most impressive changes are the new Kahn Design RSL wheels in Silver Palladium Finish. Next to the new wheels, the package also includes new front and rear bumpers, wider wheel arches, a sports lowering suspension, and Liquid Red brake calipers. The interior includes stunning quilted perforated leather interior seats and a Kahn glove box complete with carbon effect inserts. | U.S. to be 2014 Ferrari Enzo's biggest market despite price hike over original Posted: 17 May 2012 03:00 AM PDT
The Ferrari Enzo's successor has been in the pipeworks for upwards of five years now and with its launch creeping closer and closer every day, additional details are being released frequently. The latest information to be released is in regards to sales of the car codenamed the 'F70' and just which markets Ferrari plans to targets with its latest halo car. The U.S. has always been one of, if not the largest sales market for Ferrari. Ever since the brand's inception in 1929, Americans have enveloped the Italian marque and as a result of this long history between duo, Ferrari aims to target the U.S. significantly. It also hopes it will be the car's largest market when it goes on sale next year. A company insider who was speaking to Bloomberg released the information as well as a few other juicy details including the new car's rumored price of $850,000 in the U.S., which will put it right in the same realm as the incredible Porsche 918 Spyder. Even though the U.S. is said to be the F70's largest market when deliveries begin in mid or late 2013, less than 100 units are expected to make their way here if the 399 units of the Enzo which were produced are a guide as to how many of its successor will be produced. Ferrari expects the F70 to completely reshape the automotive industry as it should pave the way for other supercars to follow and if the rumors are to be believed, it'll feature an incredible V12 engine pumping out 800HP by itself or 920HP when combined with the advanced KERS system. The second model to be displayed by Seat at the 2012 Wörthersee event, next to the Leon Super Copa, is the Ibiza SC Trophy. The SC Trophy is based on the new generation of the standard Ibiza. It is priced at 31,500 Euro (about $40K at the current exchange rates) and has been described as the ideal starting machine for amateur racing drivers. The new Ibiza SC Trophy is powered by a 1.4 liter TSI engine that delivers a total of 180 HP and is mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission operated from the steering wheel. The engine has been combined with a modified oil sump, a powerful brake system, and racing suspension running on 18-inch wheels housed under noticeably flared wheel arches. The interior drops all the "unnecessary" elements from the production model and provides only data truly relevant to racing drivers. The interior is painted in a special grey paint finish combined with fluorescent orange on the mirror casings, wheels, and interior roll cage. The Seat Ibiza SC Trophy can be driven in single-brand race series. Seat Ibiza SC Trophy originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 17 May 2012 09:00 EST. | ||

Alongside the 500, 600, and 650 Pantahs in the early 1980s was a range of 350s specifically produced for the Italian market to accommodate a tax break for motorcycles below 350 cc. The 350 XL was one of Ducati's parts-bin specialties and essentially a 500 SL with a 600 TL handlebar fairing and higher handlebars. More was sourced from the SL Pantah than the TL, including instruments, instrument panel, and rear-set foot-pegs. The 350 engine was a downsized 500 SL, with smaller valves (33.5 mm inlet and 30.5 mm exhaust). The Dell'Orto carburetors were smaller (30 mm), and there were new camshafts. The lower end, including the five-speed gearbox and wet cable-operated clutch, was identical to the later 500 SL, and the exhaust system was Silentium. The power was still a healthy 40 horsepower at 9,600 rpm. The 350 XL chassis was also very similar to the 500 SL, with gold FPS wheels, Paioli suspension, and small 05-series Brembo front brake calipers. Attractively styled in red and black, the 350 XL was capable of around 170 km/h. The 350 XL offered here is in excellent original condition, with nice paint and chrome. The Ducati XL350 Pantah was estimated to bring in between €3,000-€5,000, but it actually brought in €585, which is about $745 at the current rates. | Video: Making of the Audi R8 drifting tribute Posted: 16 May 2012 09:00 PM PDT
A few days ago Audi has unveiled a pretty cool video presenting Audi R8 drifting as a tribute to their 500,000 German Facebook fans. Today the company has unveiled another video presenting the details behind the making of the first video. The car was driven by Dindo Capello who talks about this impressive experience. He considers that the most difficult part was making the "5:" "In the past, it would have been impossible to something like that without preparing the car for the event but now, with a Audi road car, you can do it." The Audi R8 is powered by a 5.2 liter V10 engine that delivers 518 HP and 391 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual clutch S-tronic gearbox and sprints the car from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and up to a top speed of 197 mph.
