BMW Z4 Roadster

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT

The BMW Z4 is a relatively young model on the market. Its first generation was announced in 2002, and became a very successful model on the market thanks to its beautiful design language and its relatively cheaper price compared to other sports cars.

At the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, BMW brought out the second generation Z4. And, next to a new design language and new engines, the E89 model came with big changes to the line-up: the coupe version was dropped and so was the previous M version. Instead, BMW offered a Z4 sDrive35is version - the most powerful Z4 currently available on the market.

On the US market, the current Z4 line-up includes the Z4 sDrive28i, the Z4 sDrive35i, and the Z4 sDrive35is with prices ranging from $48,650 to $64,200. In Europe, customers can also opt for the sDrive20i, sDrive23i, or sDrive30i.

Hennessey Venom GT Spyder

Posted: 22 May 2012 11:30 AM PDT

The sleek and sexy Hennessey Venom GT became a successful model in a very short time and Hennessey is hoping to repeat that success with an open top version of the same sports car. The new Hennessey Venom GT Spyder will be offered with a removable top and will only be produced in a limited run of five units, two of which have already been spoken for. Deliveries will begin in Summer 2012 and prices will start from $1.1 million, about $150,000 more than the Coupe’s top version.

The Venom GT Spyder will be powered by the same Chevrolet sourced V8 engine found in the Coupe with an output of 1,200 HP at 6,500 rpm and 1,155 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm. Because of the added weight from the removable roof, performance numbers should be a tad bit slower than the Coupe, which sprints from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds and to 200 mph in 15.9 seconds, on its way up to a top speed of 275 mph. The engine will more than likely send its power to the rear wheels via a Ricardo 6-speed gearbox and handling will be facilitated by a KW variant three-adjustable coilover suspension.

As far as its design goes, the Venom GT Spyder will start off with the Lotus Elise base and will follow along the same extreme design lines as its Coupe sibling. We imagine it will also feature the same active aero system with adjustable rear wing that will deploy under varying conditions on both the road and racetrack.

"With the hardtop in place, the Venom GT offers a very visceral, raw, driving experience," said Hennessey CEO, Don Goldman. "With the hardtop removed, the wind and the growl of the twin turbo V8 will offer our clients an even greater driving sensation."

The 1,200 HP will make the Venom GT Spyder the most powerful convertible in the world. Will it also be the fastest? We believe it will, but Hennessey will have to keep that 275 mph top speed intact.

UPDATE 05/22/2012: Following the delivery of the first Venom GT Spyder to Steven Tyler, Hennessey has dropped two new images of their latest supercar, as well as a video featuring the chassis dyno testing. Enjoy!

Lamborghini Aventador Triangle by German Special Customs

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 07:00 AM PDT

We may not have been familiar with these guys before, but German Special Customs is doing a pretty fine job in getting some serious attention.

The German tuning company has already been featured twice recently with their works on the Mercedes CLS63 AMG and the Lamborghini Aventador. But apparently, those two are only the beginning of what looks like a ridiculous new line-up of tuning projects. Not content with just one program for the mighty Italian supercar, GSC has come up with another one, called the Triangle.

We’re not exactly sure what the logic behind the name is, but the custom Italian specialist’s program will make us forget the name. Similar to the Aventador Estatura GXX, the Aventador Triangle comes with a fresh new body kit that, while a little more subdued than the Estatura, is still one that adds a whole new dynamic to the Aventador.

The carbon fiber body kit includes a new front bumper, a new rear bumper, wider side skirts, a modified bonnet, a huge rear wing, and a new titanium exhaust system.

No word yet on any performance mods, but we won’t be surprised if one is coming soon. What we do know, at least judging from the photos, is that the Triangle could be a street-legal version whereas the Estatura GXX looks like its exclusively for track purposes.

Mercedes S-Class S70 by Lorinser

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Usually, when a Mercedes S-Class gets a little work done to it, it is at the hands of Brabus. Not in this case! Lorinser has just dropped a tuning package called the S70, which is based on the S600.

The standard Merc S600 is powered by a powerful V12 engine that produces 510 HP. Lorinser got in there to install a power kit that pushes that output up to 805 HP! This impressive Power Kit includes a larger turbocharger, a free-flow exhaust system, and a reinforced rear axle, as well as the obligatory ECU mapping. As a result, the engine now delivers the aforementioned 805 hp and a peak torque of 936 lbs-ft between 1900-4200 rpm. Top speed comes electronically limited to 186 mph, but it can be increased to 205 mph upon request.

The exterior kit includes a new front air dam (with LED and PTS), a new rear bumper, side skirts, and a rear lip and roof spoiler. The car sits on a new set of 20" multi-part light-alloy wheels painted in matte-black. The interior is wrapped in Nappa leather in Maybach Zeppelin-look combined with wood in black piano lacquer.

We saw a package similar to this in early 2011 when Speedriven puts its own twist on the S600. That package let out 695 horsepower and 840 lb/ft of torque, but Lorinser’s package eclipses that. The only thing left to see is how much this upgrade is going to set us back.

Video: BMW i8 Concept at Concorso d'Eleganza

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Have we ever told you Marchettino is our favorite Youtube user? Yes, we know we did, but we are saying it once again! And if you don’t trust us just watch this pretty cool video he has filmed at the 2012 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The start of the video: BMW i8 Concept.

The BMW i8 Concept is powered by a 220 HP turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine driving the rear axle combined with two electric motors driving the front wheels and that add another 139 HP. As a result the i8 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds and will offer a fuel economy of 94 mpg. Top speed will be electronically limited to 155 mph.

Impressive numbers for the i8, right? But it has been reported that the future of the hybrid supercar has been endangered. Lets hope not, though!

The World's Fastest Supercars to Duke it out at the 2012 Pageant of Power

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 04:00 AM PDT

You know it's race season with all of the awesome races we are talking about and one lesser known, but equally awesome, race is set to take place June 15th – 17th, 2012. This race is appropriately dubbed the Pageant of Power, as it boasts some of the world's fastest supercars all battling for the fastest lap time on a 1.2-mile-long track.

This race is headlined by a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport featuring a 258 mpg top speed, one of now 76 remaining Aston Martin One-77s following the horrific death of one earlier in the week, and a Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale. We venture to say that with the Bugatti is in this year's running and the 62.68-second lap time record set by Nikki Faulkner in 2010 is in jeopardy, but we will have to wait and see.

The event is expected to pull in a total of 75,000 fans and with tickets starting at just £26 ($39) for a single-day pass and ranging up to £85 ($127.50) for a full 3-day pass with access to the fireworks display and the Mossley Brass Band show, there is no wonder it draws such a high number of fans. $127.50 for three days of supercars tearing up a track and a well-produced fireworks display to follow sounds like a sweet deal to us!

In addition to the supercars, there is a class dedicated only to AC Cobras with the same purpose of completing the 1.2-mile track in the shortest amount of time. There is also a series of Autograss races run throughout the weekend, which occur on a 400-meter-long oval soil track plus there is an ultra-technical Supermoto class, which is a mixture of motocross and road racing.

Needless to say, there is plenty of piston-thumping excitement throughout the entire weekend to keep any motorhead interested.

Your Wish is BMW's Command, M6 to Get a Manual Transmission Option

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 03:30 AM PDT

In recent years we have all seen three pedal setups going the way of the three-on-the-tree gear shifter, as automakers have pretty much perfected the automatic transmission. Even those looking to save a few bucks in gas don't even have to opt for the manual transmission anymore, as the difference between the two is negligible and sometimes automatics are even more efficient than their manual counterparts.

The thing is that some people – myself included – just like the feeling of control we have over the car when shifting a manual transmission and no dual-clutch, paddle-shit auto can fulfill our control-freak ways. This became a bit of a problem when BMW decided it was time to bring the M6 back to the States, as our European friends are just fine with its dual-clutch 7-speed automatic and BMW had no need to fit it with a manual. This brought some concern to those looking to snatch up the M6 the second it hits U.S. showrooms.

Well, it looks like BMW still pays a significant attention to its American market, as according to reports, there will be a 6-speed manual option on the America-bound BMW M6. There is a little uncertainty as to whether it will make it in time to be on the 2013 model year or if we'll have to wait for the 2014 model year to see the 6-speed gearbox.

We're willing to put a dollar on the fact that it will indeed make it into the 2013 model year, as BMW does not want to lose a portion of its 2013 M6 sales to us three-pedal connoisseurs. Either way, we are happy to see the M6 returning, goofy engine sound effects and all, but we really want to feel that 560 horsepower as we slam through the six gears.

We'll update you the second we get confirmation on what model year will get the manual option.

Honda Civic Type-R

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 03:00 AM PDT

The European version of the new generation Honda Civic made its debut last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. And today, just a few months after, our spy photographers have the first proof that Honda is preparing a a Type-R version of the new Civic: a mule of the upcoming car has been spied close to the Honda’s technical center near Nürburgring.

The first obvious differences are on the exterior. The mule features a big rear wing fitted over the rear window, bigger exhaust pipes and a deeper front spoiler that might indicate that this is just the first mule for the Civic Type-R testing some chassis settings. The production version will also get a deep front spoiler, a new rear bumper with diffuser, wider and bigger wheels and sportier seats.

The next Civic Type R is said to be focused on track orientated customers. This means that Honda will focus on improving the chassis and the car’s handling, while the high-revving engine will probably deliver somewhere around 220-230 HP.

BMW 7-Series

Posted: 25 May 2012 04:30 AM PDT

The current generation BMW 7-Series was only launched a couple of years ago, but with Mercedes tackling their S-Class with modifications improving fuel efficiency, as well as design, BMW had limited time to freshen up the competition. The facelifted BMW 7-Series will find its way to the market in 2013, ready to meet the new S-Class straight on.

The new 7-Series has received changes to both the exterior and the interior, as well as a line-up of new and upgraded engine variants. For the exterior, BMW has added new full-LED headlights, a prominent BMW kidney grille, and a modified front apron, while the interior gets a multifunctional instrument display and a new Rear Seat Entertainment package.

The engine line-up will range from the 258 HP 3-liter straight-six petrol engine found in the entry-level 730i up to a 544 HP V12 engine found in the top version, the 760i. All of the versions will be combined with Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, and the second-generation Driving Experience Control switch with ECO PRO mode.

UPDATE 05/25/2012: This review has been updated with the official details and images for the BMW 7-Series.

Spy shots: 2014 Mercedes C-Class reveals its interior

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Back in February the next generation Mercedes C-Class has been caught testing for the first time during winter conditions. And now our spy photographers caught the car testing one more time, except that now they have also snapped a picture of the interior. As you can see the next C-Class will get the Ipad looking display for infotainment and Sat-Nav on top of the dash.

Like with most of the all new Mercedes models, the next C-Class will also benefit from the round SLS look-alike air-outlets. A bigger panoramic roof will also be offered with the Magic-Sky option.

Under the hood Mercedes will place both petrol and diesel engines, but a hybrid version will also be offered for the first time. The current seven-speed automatic gearbox will be replaced by a new nine-speeds one.

The next C-Class will be initially offered as a sedan, with a station wagon to follow six months later. A coupe and a convertible will also be offered, and, for the first time, Mercedes will offer a MST variant.

MST stands for Midsize Sports Tourer and will be a crossing between Wagon and Van or, in just another words a smaller version of the R-Class.

The 2014 C-Class will be produced in the US as well, at the Alabama plant alongside the GL and ML-Class.
