With almost one month before its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show, BMW has unveiled the first details on the first generation M6. The Convertible version will be the first to arrive on the US market, with sale to begin in June 2012. The new generation M6 Convertible will be distinguished by a more powerful and sportier appearance, thanks to its special M design cues elements: a newly designed M kidney grille featuring an "M6" badge, larger air dam and lower bumper and a new set of 19-inch M light-alloy wheels. The interior gets a newly developed M sports seats, Merino extended leather upholstery, door sills with "M6" lettering, an M driver's footrest and exclusive carbon fiber interior trim. The car’s roof is made from natural color Carbon Fiber Composite and comes painted ina dark color. It can be operated at speeds of up to 25 mph and takes 19 seconds to open and 24 seconds to close again. In terms of power, BMW has opted to transfer the turbocharged 4.4 liter V8 - first used in the M5 - over to the M6. This engine will deliver a total of 560 HP (a 5 HP over the previous generation) and a peak torque of 500 lbs-ft. The engine will be mated to a a newly developed 7-speed double-clutch transmission and will sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, while top speed is limited to 155 mph. BMW trademarks M7 and M10 names Posted: 04 Jun 2012 07:00 AM PDT
Last week, we reported that Ludwig Willisch, CEO of BMW's North American sales subsidiary, was fighting to offer its clients an M performance version of BMW’s top of the line sedan: the 7-Series. Now, new details suggest that BMW has indeed trademarked the M7 name, as well as an even more interesting M10, which were both previously registered in October 2010 (M7) and September 2011 (M10). For the future M7, things are pretty clear. The next generation 7-Series will finally allow BMW to offer a real competitor for models like the Audi S8 and the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG. For the M10, all we have to go on is the trademarked name. If we were to speculate, we would say that this is more than likely the name that will be used for a long-denied model: a BMW competitor for the Audi R8 and the Mercedes SLS. BMW has stated many times that the company would love to offer such a model, but have denied its existence on several occasions. The search for trademarked names continues with the M1 and M2 names, as well as a bunch of i names, ranging from i1 to i9. Considering the i-sub brand was just in the news for being too ahead of its time, these names will probably sit on the sidelines until 2017 or beyond. In related news, BMW also trademarked the Corniche name that will most likely be used for a convertible version of the Rolls Royce Ghost. Audi hasn’t exactly been skywriting the future of the RS5 model, but a couple of years ago when plans for the RS5 were getting ironed out, the company had already confirmed a convertible variant for the sports coupe. Well, the debut for the vehicle came and went and no convertible version seemed to be in sight. Until now. Audi has applied trademarks for a RS5 Convertible and has also released patent drawings for the vehicle. The images reveal the same design language found on the recently launched facelift RS5 and will have the same electrically operated fabric top as the A5 and S5 convertibles. Under the hood, the convertible will get the same 4.2 liter V8 engine as the coupe version with an output of 450 HP and a peak torque of 317.15 lb-ft available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. The engine will be combined with Audi’s seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission and quattro all-wheel drive system. Since the patent drawings have already been released, expect a production model for the Audi RS5 Convertible to be launched fairly quickly. Watch out, BMW M3 Convertible, Audi’s coming after you! Main image is our rendering of the Audi RS5 Convertible. Check out the patent drawing in the gallery! UPDATE 10/11/2011: The upcoming Audi RS5 Cabrio has been caught testing at the Nurburgring test track. The model features a bigger front spoiler, bigger brakes, and wider fenders. Enjoy! Shelby Owners Around the World Honor Carroll Shelby Honored in Fitting Fashion Posted: 04 Jun 2012 05:00 AM PDT
The name Carroll Shelby spans across three makes – Ford, Chrysler, and Dodge – and is arguably the most recognized name by any true automotive buff. Unfortunately, we lost this remarkable man just weeks ago following a fight with pneumonia, but he is far from forgotten. This past Wednesday, Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles decided that it was time to give Mr. Shelby a proper send off. Unlike many folks, a moment of silence just wouldn't be a good fit for a man notorious for filling the streets with cars boasting awesome-sounding exhaust systems and cams that lobe so hard it feels like the earth is moving. In lieu of the typical moment of silence, PAM chose to honor Mr. Shelby with a "Moment of Noise" at precisely 6:55 p.m. PST on May 30th. Over 1,200 cars bearing the "Shelby" name showed up at PAM to let their pistons and dual exhaust give this legend a proper send off. But it was not all about the noise, as there was a series of speakers that followed the roaring of these Shelby-designed machines in an event named "Carroll Shelby a Life Remembered," which Jay Leno hosted. The event was not limited to just L.A., as Shelby cars around the world fired up and paid tribute to this great man. Fortunately, the wide world web has come in handy again, as a plethora of videos of the various synchronized revving around the world have popped up online and we have them for you. There is also an awesome tribute done up by the folks at Forza Motorsport of all Mr. Shelby's creations running side-by-side around a track. In all, it was a spectacular showing and our hats go off to the participants and to the man that made this all possible, Mr. Carroll Shelby… Click past the jump to see the other four videos. Aston Martin DBS successor will be called Vanquish Posted: 04 Jun 2012 04:00 AM PDT
Aston Martin used the Vanquish name for the first back in 2001 when it unveiled the grand tourer designed by Ian Callum. After a successful run on the market and a role in Die Another Day, the Vanquish went out of production in 2007, but now it seems as though the company is considering bringing it back. British magazine, CAR, has caught the new DBS successor fully uncovered with the rear sporting a "Vanquish" badge. This is the first and only uncovered photo of the new DBS, so the only details available are for the rear of the car. In the image, there’s an elegant integrated rear spoiler, a very elegant rear deck and a pair of blunderbuss exhausts straddling a large diffuser panel designed for maximum aero efficiency and air-cleaving. As you can see, these elements were inspired by the One-77 supercar as was originally promised. Previewed by the AM 310 concept car, the new DBS - aka Vanquish Mk2 - will be making its world debut later this summer at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Leave it to Mazda to decide that the world hasn’t had enough of special edition MX-5 Miatas. Actually, they’re right; we can’t get enough of them. So when they took to the 2012 Auto Mobil International Show in Leipzig, Germany to debut the MX-5 Miata Yushu Concept, it certainly got our attention, and then some. Named after the Japanese word for "Victory," the MX-5 Yusho Concept is the kind of concept proposal for the popular sports car that makes us remember why we love Miatas so much. The matte white paint finish is already an eye-catcher in its own right, but it also paints only a part of the modifications Mazda did to the car. It also received new aero components, a new interior treatment, and best of all, engine modifications. About the only thing we didn’t like about the MX-5 Yushu Concept was Mazda failing to say that the car - or at least some of the mods - is getting ready for production. Nevertheless, the MX-5 Yushu Concept is still a beauty, a car that we’re more than hoping to see out in dealerships sooner rather than later. Find out more about the Mazda MX-5 Miata Yushu Concept after the jump. Mazda MX-5 Yusho Concept originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 4 June 2012 10:00 EST. | ||
The Ferrari P4/5 Competizione is on Fire at Nurburgring... Literally Posted: 04 Jun 2012 02:00 AM PDT
A few weeks ago, we let you know that the Ferrari P4/5 Competizione became the hottest thing to lap the Nürburgring, as it crushed the old Ferrari record around the Ring by over 7 seconds. Well, the Ferrari P4/5 Competizione was again the hottest thing on four wheels on the Ring, but this time in the literal sense. Yup, while in the pits at the Nürburgring, a small amount of fuel hit the red hot engine and… Well, you can fill in the blanks. Needless to say, the rear end of the Ferrari became quite the fireball, thanks to racing fuel meeting the freshly raced engine. Fortunately, the picture of the fire makes it look a lot worse than it actually was, as the team was able to douse the fire and get the car back onto the track. We guess that all part of the typical pit crew day, huh? What's even more impressive is following this fire, the team managed to regroup and end up taking 1st place in the Alternative Energy Class in the 2012 24 hours of Nürburgring, which it entered as a hybrid, and 12th overall. Good job to the team for their racing and fire-fighting abilities! The Ferrari P4/5 Competizione is on Fire at Nurburgring... Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake Posted: 04 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT
Welcome to the most beautiful wagon in the world. We know that might be hard to read as wagons are seldom thought of as beautiful, but with the new Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, those thoughts might need some additional pondering. Unlike the old wagons, or even the current ones for that matter, the CLS Shooting Brake takes some of the four-door coupe design elements and translates them for wagon use. It might seem like an odd concept at first, but perhaps it’s genius. Wagons have long provided practicality, but that hasn’t exactly helped them fly out the door now has it? So, instead of pushing cargo space, Mercedes will be pushing style and that seems to work well in the automotive market place, just look at those terrible creations from BMW called the X6 and the future X1. These two are as useless as just about everything, but they’re going to sell. UPDATE 06/04/2012: While the official debut will be made next month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a series of patent images are offering us the final look of the upcoming Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake. The car’s front is clearly similar to the CLS sedan version, but the rear is quite unique: the roofline, rear window and tailgate are sharply raked for a sleek profile.
