Ferrari capitalism now finds its way into golf

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Most automakers have the propensity to look for other avenues to affect their bottom line apart from the cars they build. In some cases, it’s through fashion and in other cases, it’s through accessories. Some even go as far as building race simulators.

In the case of Ferrari, it’s all of the above - and then some.

Now, the Italian automaker is diving into the world of golf with the release of the Ferrari Golf Collection.

Working in partnership with Cobra Puma, the new collection features a number of golf gear that will carry the unmistakable Ferrari brand. The crown jewel of the collection is the COBRA Ferrari Driver, a golf club that was inspired by the COBRA ZL Encore Driver and carefully modified by Ferrari aerodynamics engineers to reduce drag coefficient, allowing the club to improve its head speed.

To show just how important this item is to the collection, Ferrari and Cobra Puma even went as far as adding a hand-stitched leather grip, a headcover made from genuine Ferrari leather, and a Fujikura Motore Speeder Shaft. Heck, it even comes with its own display box for crying out loud!

In addition to this wonderful piece of golf gear, the Ferrari Golf Collection also includes apparel, footwear, visors, bags, belts, gloves, and of course, umbrellas.

The collection is scheduled to go on sale next month, which means that if you need a fresh change of golf paraphernalia, then maybe you ought to give this new collection a swing. No pun intended, of course.

Lindsay Lohan Slams a Rental Porsche into a Semi-Truck

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 02:00 AM PDT

It's time for TopSpeed: Celebrity Edition! Per a report from TMZ, oft-troubled actress, Lindsay Lohan, learned that an 18-wheeler always wins against a Porsche 911. While driving down the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica, Lohan managed to plant the front end of her rented – yes, RENTED – Porsche 911 into the backside of an 18-wheeler.

Don't worry, your favorite teen star gone awry is A-okay, as she went to the hospital for tests and was released shortly afterward. According to reports, she heading to the set of the TV show she is surprisingly starring in, "Liz & Dick," when she smashed the Porsche into small bits of $100K plastic, metal, and rubber, and she is now on the set and in good health.

According to reports, Lohan is claiming that the accident was not her fault and that the 18-wheeler cut her off. Looking at the accident scene, we really don't see how an 18-wheeler could possibly cut someone off and not leave enough time for the driver to respond. Unless, of course, she was driving really, really, REALLY fast. But, we're not here to judge, we are simply stating what we can see from the images. We are certain that this is not the last we will hear about this accident.

We are all glad to hear she is in good shape, so we can all continue on our normal path of ignoring any piece of work that she happens to be in…

Video: Lamborghini Aventador vs. F16 Fighting Falcon

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 11:00 PM PDT

We’re confident in saying that everyone has seen at least one video of a car being put up against a fighter jet, like our favorite, the Bugatti Veyron vs Eurofighter Typhoon Jet. Well, it was our favorite, until now. A Danish car magazine has put together a winning combination that has stolen the title of the best car vs fighter jet video by pinning a Lamborghini Aventador against an F16 Fighting Falcon. It was a race between a 700 HP supercar and a 125,000 HP jet; a top speed of 217 mph vs. 1,319 mph. It’s a pretty unbalanced match, but the much lighter Aventador still held its own. Besides, with videos like these, the race itself is more important than finding out the winner.

Hit the jump for one more video.

Video: Forza Horizon E3 trailer

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 09:00 PM PDT

Last month, Turn 10 Studios dropped the first screenshot and the cover box for the upcoming Forza Horizon game. Now, the company is offering up the first trailer, as well as a series of new screenshots for the game set to be released on October 23rd, 2012.

While the game is still being kept a secret, this new trailer offers a few more details on the upcoming game. As promised, the 2013 SRT Viper will be one of the cars featured, but the screenshots also reveal other cars: the 2012 BMW M5, the Nissan 370Z, the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 and the Ford GT, among many others.

Here’s how Turn 10 Studios describes the game: "The moment you put your hands to the controller to play the Forza Horizon E3 2012 demo, you know you’re about to experience something special. After all, Forza Horizon is a new take on the Forza franchise; an open-world action racing game that transports players to the epic open roads of Colorado. It’s where gear-heads mix with hipster kids in a clashing cacophonous clamor of V12 engines and driving beats."

First Tesla Model S Owner Takes Delivery

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 08:00 PM PDT

The anticipated release of the Tesla Model S is nearly here. It began just a few days ago with the launch of the Tesla Model S design studio, so customers could customize their own Model S and place an order. Just a few days later, we are now set to announce that the first Model S has been handed over to its owner over two weeks before the car's official release date of June 22nd.

You may be wondering how exactly a customer got his hands on one of the hottest new cars available so early. Well, the first Model S went to Tesla board member, Steve Jurvetson. When you're one of the bosses, we assume that you can pull a few strings to get your ride a little early.

What's even better is that there is a video of Mr., Jurvetson taking delivery and you can honestly see that he is excited to get his hands on the first Model S and one of the already sold out Signature Series trim levels. Despite some minor audio issues around the midway point of the video, it is all pretty clear. What's pretty funny is when Jurvetson hops in his Model S for the first time at the 1:47 mark, fires up its completely silent motor, and pulls away, you will notice that he obviously pressed the accelerator a little too hard, as the car launches forward a few feet before he releases the pedal.

That would have been an interesting story to tell had he lost control the first ever Tesla Model S on its inaugural run. Fortunately, he kept it under control and we are left with a cool video of the first model S to hit the streets. In about two weeks, all of you folks not associated with Tesla will start getting notifications that your car is finished and ready for delivery. Until then, just enjoy the video.

Video: Miniature Police Chase

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 07:00 PM PDT

Every now and again we come across something of such creative genius that we just cannot get enough of it. The above video is one example of someone taking a new technology – pocket projector – and doing something so bad ass that it'll be forever etched in our memory. In this example, the folks at The Theory have taken a pocket projector and fed it video of various movements of a police chase and projected that chase throughout a room.

It sounds simple and pretty stupid on paper, but once you watch it, you'll see the creative genius that we are talking about. All of the motions of the characters are precisely timed and actually look realistic, even though they are happening in 2-D.

To make matters even better, the folks at The Theory pulled at our auto strings a little harder by including a Ford GT40 in the chase, which is something that none of us would ever see in a lifetime.

Have a look at the video above and get a few chuckles on us. While you're at it, think about how much time this filmmaking duo must have put into this video. We can't help but think how much technology has progressed in the last decade, considering that projectors that could put out images like in this video were the size of a small desk and cost over $1,000.

The technology behind the device is just as amazing as the ingenuity behind the video… Enjoy.

Seized $3.7 Million Mercedes-Benz 500K Belongs to Heirs, per Court Ruling

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 06:00 PM PDT

So picture that you just snagged up a car for, let's say $3,800, and it is a great car that you completely fall in love with. A year later, you find out that the car was illegally seized according to a court ruling and you have to hand the car over to the heirs of its original owner. You'd be pretty upset, right? Well, add three zeros to that price and you that exact situation unfolding in Germany.

A Dutch car collector purchased a 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K Roadster from RM Auctions last year for a whopping $3.8 million in California. When the collector shipped the car back to Germany, the German government seized the car stating that it was illegally taken by an American military official around 1945 and shipped to the U.S., as the heirs of the pricy automobile are claiming that the American serviceman stole the vehicle and hid it in the U.S.

Typically, Germany has a 30-year statute of limitation on this sort of case, but a German court stated that since the car was not in Germany for 30 years, the limitation clock never started, which is an odd interpretation of statute of limitations laws. The strangest thing is that between 1945 and 1970, no one has any idea where the car was and what was being done with it, so there is technically no proof that the car was not in Germany, and we find the ruling a little off the wall.

We certainly hope that the buyer can recoup at least a majority of the $3.8 million he used to purchase the car from the seller. Also, there has to be some U.S. law on the books that puts RM Auctions on the hook for selling a car with a shady and undocumented past that just may cost the collector millions of dollars.

One thing's for sure, if this car wasn't worth $3.7 million, we are willing to bet that the heirs couldn't have cared less about getting back the property… We'll keep you updated as this story progresses.

Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro by XXX-Performance

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 01:00 PM PDT

When it comes to tuning the Audi R8, it’s the V8 version that gets most of the attention. Generally, this is because tuners try to update it to the same power level as the V10 version. This time, however, German tuner XXX Performance took on the challenge of working on the R8 5.2 V10 FSI and provided a complete upgrade package.

The exterior of the Audi R8 V10 by XXX is special in its own right because it’s not every day you have the chance to see a green R8. The tuner combined a real eye-catching bilious green with a carbon foil finish on the side blades and the exterior rear-view mirrors, while the front grille and the headlamps were painted in black. Next, the tuner added a new set of 20" Oxigin 14-Oxrock rims that are fitted with foils to match the bodywork. The new wheels also come with an H&R coilover kit that allows a massive lowering of the vehicle. The interior has been wrapped in fine Alcantara and real leather in a carbon fiber look with white seams.

The best part of the upgrade is the power upgrade provided to the sports car. XXX Performance opted to optimize the engine software and added a BMC carbon air-box as well as a high-end sports exhaust system with Bluetooth flap control system. The result is an amazing 650 HP - up from the standard 525 HP.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Gold Edition

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 12:00 PM PDT

It seems as though the Chinese market is getting a lot of special attention lately, probably due to the fact that they are on their way to becoming one of the biggest automotive markets in the world. Ferrari already built them a special 458 Italia and now Lamborghini has just unveiled the new Gallardo LP560-4 Gold Edition - offered exclusively for the Chinese market. The model will be limited to only 10 units and will be priced at 3 million Yuan - or the equivalent of $600,000. That’s $200K more than a standard Gallardo.

The new Gallardo LP560-4 Gold Edition will be distinguished by a special gold metallic paint combined with a new set of special alloys and a new engine cover. The interior gets red stitching on the steering wheel and seats.

Other than that, everything else on the Gallardo is the same. It will still be powered by a 5.2 liter V10 engine that delivers a total of 552 HP at 8,000 rpm and a peak torque of 398 lb-ft available at 6,500 rpm. This is enough power to sprint the supercar up to a top speed of 201mph.

BMW Z4 White Wold by Rowen Japan

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 10:00 AM PDT

While BMW is currently designing the next generation Z4, Japanese tuner Rowen gave updating the current generation a try. We don’t necessarily think it needs updating, but to each his own.

The updates for the BMW Z4 began with the exterior where the base element was carbon fiber. The kit consists of a new front bumper spoiler, side steps, a side carbon under flap, rear bumper spoiler, and wing all made of carbon fiber. A new set of wheels complete the look, while the rear of the vehicle gets a new titanium high performance exhaust system that weighs 28 lbs less than the standard exhaust. However, Rowen has yet to reveal if this new exhaust system will translate into any changes under the hood, but it is very possible.

On top of those changes, the package also includes a new LED reflector and a LED Z4 emblem to make it a bit more eye-catching.
