Scion FR-S will be offered for free in new Gran Turismo 5 DLC

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 08:30 AM PDT

Polyphony Digital has announced the addition of two new packs for their Gran Turismo 5 sim racing video game: the ’Twin Ring Motegi Pack’ and ’Scion FR-S ’12’ DLC. The best part of this announcement is that the FR-S will be available as a free download, in hopes of bumping up the amount of downloads taking place.

The new Twin Ring Motegi Pack, however, does not come free of charge, but includes the Twin Ring Motegi ’Road Course,’ the ’Super Speedway,’ the ’East Course,’ and the ’West Course’. For only $5, gamers will be able to try out the famous racetrack in Japan with its large variety of layouts.

The ’Scion FR-S ’12’ DLC is FREE and adds the new Scion FR-S to the gamer’s own garage. As a reminder, the model is powered by a 2.0-liter front boxer engine that delivers a total of 200 horsepower and 151 lb/ft of torque. The engine can then be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. On the US market, the FR-S is priced from $24,930.

Aston Martin DB9 1M

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Last November, Aston Martin launched a cool competition on Facebook in order to celebrate its One Million fans. People were asked to choose between four different designs - Aero, Dynamic, Heritage and Heritage Art - for a new model called the "DB9 1M." The winner has finally been selected as the Aero.

This special DB9 1M features 20-spoke, silver diamond-turned wheels, black brake calipers, and an Obsidian Black and Spicy Red interior with a Piano Black fascia.

This will most likely be the last version of the current DB9 built before Aston Martin brings the next generation to the market next year. Aston Martin has announced that the DB9 1M will make its official debut in the next few days, but the first image was published on their Facebook account. We don’t expect to see this model built in large numbers nor do we expect the winner to receive this as a gift.

We’ll keep you posted on any details that arrive on the Aston Martin DB9 1M when it is officially unveiled at Goodwood.

Report: The Emerg-E may not be the Halo Car that Infiniti is Seeking

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 07:00 AM PDT

There is no doubt that a fairly wide gap exists between Infiniti and its F1 sponsorship. Really, there is not a single production Infiniti that anyone can point to and say "Ah, that is a car that relates to open-wheel performance racing." Sure, there have been concepts and so forth, but nothing firm.

The halo car was once thought to be the upcoming Emerg-E hybrid, but signs are pointing that the Emerg-E may disappoint. Infiniti is planning to have a running prototype of the Emerg-E ready to go for Goodwood Festival of Speed and, according to several outside sources that Car and Driver has spoken to, this gas-electric hybrid may not be the performance car that everyone is expecting (sub-five-second 0 – 60 time, 420 horsepower, etc.).

While that is really disappointing, as we were anticipating huge things from the Emerg-E, we cannot say that we are surprised. Infiniti has been really tight-lipped on this project, which oftentimes means that there are some issues going on. If the reports are accurate, then the tight lips have been due to the Emerg-E not being able to reach the power numbers that Infiniti estimated.

Don't fret though, as Infiniti does have a fallback plan, in the form of the 2009 concept, the Essence. Yes, the Essence has been effectively shelved since its debut, but, according to reports, there are still talks about this 592-horsepower hybrid making its way into production in one form or another.

For now, all we have are unconfirmed reports from outside sources, so we will reserve our judgment for Goodwood. Who knows, the Emerg-E could come out and blow us away, and Infiniti may have kept it quiet just to avoid the competition, like Acura's NSX and BMW's i8, from knowing what Infiniti is planning.

Goodwood kicks off on June 28th, so we don't have to wait too awful long to find out. We'll update you just as soon as we hear more about this situation.

Mazda MX-5 GT Concept

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Mazda will be attending the Goodwood Festival of Speed with a very cool Mazda MX-5 GT Concept which may head to production depending on customers’ reactions at the festival. The concept was developed by Jota Sport and looks a lot like the MX-5 Super20 unveiled last year at the SEMA Auto Show.

The GT Concept is powered by a normally aspirated 2.0-litre Mazda petrol engine that delivers a total of 205 HP and is mated to a standard manual gearbox. Mazda is also offering an updated suspension, as well as an impressive aerodynamic package that includes a carbon front splitter, a rear diffuser, and a boot spoiler. The final piece of the exterior is a sports exhaust system with a central tailpipe.

For the interior, the concept gets Recaro seats and plenty of carbon fiber to suits any sports car enthusiast. Road slicks and body-colored roll hoops behind the seats were also added for customers who want to run the car on the race track.

"This year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed we have a number of significant cars on the stand and contesting the hillclimb," said Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda UK. "The MX-5 has been our best known car for 22 years and with the GT4 and GT Concept on show, we are demonstrating that this car can compete with the more expensive race and performance cars but still remain true to its roots of affordable motoring with a strong focus on the driving experience."

Tesla Releasing 1-Hour Charger

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 05:00 AM PDT

One of the few thorns in the side of the EV market place is the battery charging systems. The vast majority of them require upwards of six to eight hours to reach 100 percent capacity and at the quickest, most can reach 80 percent in about three to four hours. Well, Tesla has been at the forefront of EV engineering, especially with its 300-mile-range Model S, which screams to 60 mph in about 4 seconds.

The Model S, as delivered, is no different than any other EV when it comes to charging, as its 85kWh battery requires eight hours to charge, using its standard 240-volt charging system. Tesla plans to separate itself from the competition once again by releasing a 440-volt fast-charger, which Tesla has cheekily dubbed the "Supercharger" (obligatory rim shot).

Anywho, this new "Supercharger" will be able to get the Tesla S from full discharge to 100 percent in just about an hour. The catch is that this fast charger is not designed for everyday use, it is only for those emergency fill-ups on the road. Tesla is planning to have these stations installed in high-traffic areas for on-the-spot fill ups in just about a year.

Once Tesla releases this new charger for use in the States, it will firmly place itself in the driver's seat in the EV market, leaving everyone else looking up at it wondering how this small company managed to pull off these stunts. We think the time for the other car companies to start investing more money in EV models is now, before Tesla runs away with it all.

Lamborghini Aventador by ADV.1 wheels

In ADV.1 wheels' quest to conquer the automotive market by fitting their stunning wheels to the world's supercars, the firm recently took to the new Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 with their latest set of ADV5.1 SL wheels.

Just days after releasing pictures of a stunning joint venture with SP Engineering, this stunning pearl white Aventador is able to pull off the 5.1 SL wheels incredibly well. These amazing photos help to capture the car from some of its very best angles with the stunning titanium finish helping to top off the incredible look.

This particular Aventador has yet to undergo any performance modifications, meaning its standard 6.0-liter V12 pumps out an impressive 692 horsepower, or 700 PS, at 8,250 rpm and 509lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm.

Featuring the advanced Lamborghini "ISR" transmission which, thanks to its seven-speed single clutch automated manual transmission, helps to combine comfortable shifting at low speeds, and spine-tinglingly harsh shifts when in Corsa mode.

As a result, the Aventador can hit 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds and continue onto a top speed of 217mph.

Rumors: Lamborghini Working on a 4-Seat Aventador

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 02:00 AM PDT

1.

Rumors come and rumors go, so we rarely put much stock in any given rumor, especially outlandish ones. Sometimes, however, a rumor is so incredibly ridiculous, that we cannot help but report on it. This latest rumor floating around about Lamborghini and the Aventador is one that falls in that so-ridiculous-we-can't-ignore category.

Rumors are afloat that Lamborghini is secretly working on adding a little more passenger space in the Aventador coupe. By "more passenger room," we don't mean by increasing leg room, we mean extending its wheelbase and adding two additional seats in the rear. Yeah, a 4-seat Lambo that is not called the Urus. Granted, it would likely be more of a 2+2 than a true 4-seater, but still an amazing thing to consider nonetheless.

To access these rear seats, Lambo will be installing a set of reverse-hinged rear doors, a la RX-8 or Saturn SC-2. This revised supercar is said to be dubbed the Aventador GT, which we assume stands for "Grand Touring" or something to that effect, and is said to hit the auto show circuit in Geneva next March.

Now the real question is how well we trust these rumors. Well, they are coming from our friends over at Motor Trend, and they typically won't report it, unless its source is fairly reliable. So, we can say that these rumors are credible, but will the model ever see the light of day? We really doubt it.

Why after 49 years of auto manufacturing would Lamborghini decide to change up its entire design philosophy? Then again, with Ferrari and Porsche willing to explore the 4-door and 4-seat realms, maybe Lamborghini feels like it might need to do the same to keep pace.

For now this is all just pure speculation, but if there is any truth to this rumor, Lamborghini can't keep it bottled up for too long, so we'll keep a keen eye out for any more definitive evidence of said 4-seat Aventador.

Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Most automakers have already begun to offer hybrid versions for at least one SUV in their line-up, so Mitsubishi is actually a little late in the game with this one. The company is currently working on an Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV and will have it ready for the 2012 Paris Auto Show in September. The new model will go on sale in Europe in 2013, but at this point, Mitsubishi hasn’t said anything about bringing it over to the U.S. market.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid will share the same architecture with the soon-to-be-introduced New Outlander’s ICE versions and will feature a unique drive train combination of front electric motor plus rear electric motor plus front traction/generator petrol engine. It will offer a choice of three driving modes: Pure (Twin Motor 4WD EV), Series (Twin Motor 4WD - EV supported by generator), and Parallel (ICE engine supported by Twin Motor 4WD). Mitsubishi also promised that the new Outlander Hybrid will come with a driving range of 800 kilometers (497 miles).

Video: Make Your Own Parking Space, Courtesy of the G63 AMG

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 09:00 PM PDT

Anyone that has owned an SUV or pickup truck has been here before. You are searching for a space and you think "I could just push that car outta my way and park there." Then your conscience takes over and reminds you of your insurance premiums, so you just keep looking.

Well, Mercedes has decided to show us that the G63 AMG – AKA the most bad-ass SUV ever made – can fit just about anywhere, literally. The above video is, of course, a Mercedes commercial getting ready for the launch of this much anticipated 544-horsepower super SUV. When the boss man rolls up in his G63 AMG to find a pallet of pipes and a trailer-based office in the way, he politely pushes them out of the way with his 560 pound-feet of torque to make his own space.

It's a pretty funny commercial, for Mercedes, but the irony is great. First off, the stigma that comes along with owning a Mercedes certainly fits the "me first" attitude of the driver. Secondly, who in their right mind would push, pull or tow ANYTHING with a $129,000 SUV? I sure as hell wouldn't.

Either way, check out the video and have a few chuckles on us. Hopefully, Mercedes decides to take a slightly more comedic approach with its not-so-Mercedes-like SUV. Most Mercedes commercials are a little, um, "stuffy" for our taste.
